The Premier League table has taken its shape, as PL heavyweights battle it out for the glorious PL crown come May. For defending champions Chelsea, the season hasn’t been close to being a perfect one.
Even though the Blues have done well to recover their poor form in the league, Antonio Conte’s men are still lagging behind their rivals in terms of resources and if reports from Catalan newspaper, Mundo Deportivo are to be believed, the Blues are vying for the signature of Gremio midfielder Arthur Melo in the upcoming winter window.
Melo was called up by the Brazilian national team last month for their World Cup Qualifiers. Although he is yet to make his debut in International football, the 21-year-old could soon evolve as one of his nation’s brightest prospects in coming years.
As for Chelsea, the defending champions have lacked a bit of edge going forward this season, largely due to their lack of offensive depth in the squad.
Last season’s star performer Eden Hazard has started the season in a rather untidy manner, while key wingers such as Willian and Pedro have also failed to provide the crucial productivity in the attacking department. The attacking duo has combined for just three Premier League goals this season.
Even though Cesc Fabregas has chipped in with six assists already, the Catalan born midfielder is not a long-term option for manager Antonio Conte. Therefore, the Blues are in dire need of an attacker, who can not only provide depth but also help the team right away and that’s where Brazilian Arthur comes into the play.
The Gremio midfielder is one of the most exciting players in the Brazilian top flight at the moment. He epitomizes the role of a modern-day playmaker. He is quick and sharp and is blessed with immense technical qualities.
He is also an excellent ball-carrier, who can facilitate the entire passing channel in the final third. Controlling the temp from the middle is what makes him such a valued asset for Gremio. The 21-year-old is very comfortable in his passing game, which is coupled with his excellent vision.
Put simply, Arthur Melo can prove to be the replacement for Oscar who left the club two years ago. Gremio are said to be expecting around €30m for the 21-year-old but it shouldn’t be a big concern for Chelsea, considering the fact that the Brazilian playmaker might just be the player they needed in order to revitalize their campaign this season.
But is he the right man for them in January?
