Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers is keen on bringing RB Leipzig defender Marvin Compper to the Celtic Park. The former Liverpool manager has marked the veteran defender as a top priority in the upcoming January transfer window.
In fact, the Scottish giants are in pole position of landing the RB Leipzig defender, according to reports.
Following an impressive debut season for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, where Marvin Compper was an instrumental figure in defence, die Roten Bullen coach Ralph Hassenhuttl has remodelled his backline this season. Unfortunately for Compper, the veteran defender was largely marginalized from the first team and is only a mere benchwarmer at the moment.
Young players have Dayot Upamecano, Ibrahim Konate etc. has made life difficult for the former Fiorentina defender as he has featured in just 108 minutes of professional football this season. Therefore, a move away from the club could be a logical decision for Marvin Compper.
Celtic have been one of the clubs who looked keen on securing the services of the 32-year-old. Even though the Celts are flying high in the Scottish Premiership, their form in Europe is a real worry for coach Brendan Rodgers.
The Hoops were left completely exposed at the back, following the injuries of key centre-backs Jozo Simunovic and Erik Sviatchenko, during which they had to play Nir Bitton as a centre-back alongside Dedryck Boyata, whose mistake against Bayern cost a lot for Brendan Rodgers’ men.
So it’s obvious that the Scottish outfit desperately needs a new face in the defensive department. Particularly, someone with experience and a talent of leading from the back. And there are a very few who can match those criteria as good as Marvin Compper.
As mentioned earlier, the one time German International was a pivotal figure in Leipzig’s remarkable second-placed finish in their debut season in the Bundesliga. Not only did he manage to stay solid throughout the season but also build the defensive foundation which helped Leipzig become more flexible in the defensive department in the future.
Therefore, a move for Marvin Compper could really suffice for the Scottish giants. Considering the fact that they still have some very important matches in the Europa League, being drawn against Russian giants Zenit St. Petersburg, in the round of 32, seeking some defensive solidity will be imperative for Brendan Rodgers and his men for the second half of the season.
