In a fixture that cost Bayern Munich a manager, Jupp Heynckes, their new manager, helped them to a commendable 3-1 victory over French giants PSG, in their final group stage game in the Champions League. In spite of the victory, the Bavarians remain 2nd in the group stage as PSG remain top of the group, going into the knockout phase.
Dani Alves played Robert Lewandowski onside for a tap-in before Corentin Tolisso’s well-placed header saw the hosts go into the break with a 2-0 lead. Kylian Mbappe pulled one back for the visitors but that Tolisso restored the two-goal lead, with his second of the night, to snub any chance of a comeback from PSG. Here are the player ratings for the German side in this tie:
Sven Ulreich (6):
Had a couple of routine saves to make and could not do much to stop Mbappe’s goal. Needed step out once in the second half but had an otherwise comfortable night under the bar.
Joshua Kimmich (6):
A strong performance from the 22-year old, who dealt with the threat of Neymar Jr with relative ease, keeping the threat to the goal from his flank to the minimum.
Niklas Sule (6):
Was bullied by Edinson Cavani on a couple of occasions and was not as assured as he usually is in the backline.
Mats Hummels (8):
Cleaned up everything that was thrown into the box and gave the PSG attackers no space in front of goal, frustrating them all night.
David Alaba (6):
His link-up play with Ribery was productive as usual but he had trouble tracking the French starlet Mbappe, who got the better of him more often than not.
Corentin Tolisso (8):
Put in a solid shift in the midfield, helping his backline out on every occasion but also added numbers to the attack and found himself at the end of two good moves from his side, picking up a brace in this crunch tie.
Sebastian Rudy (6):
Used his strength to good effect in the middle of the park but was not at his best in possession of the ball, inviting pressure onto his backline.
Kingsley Coman (9):
Never afraid to take on his man as he constantly troubled Kurzawa and Draxler. Picked up an assist late in the game with a superb run and had a productive game on the flanks.
James Rodriguez (8):
Found Tolisso with a sensational cross in the first half and was innovative with the ball at his feet, constantly troubling the backline with his direct approach in the final third.
Frank Ribery (6):
Was not afforded too much space by Dani Alves, who did a job on him and negated his threat completely all night. Still found space to create a couple of half chances.
Robert Lewandowski (7):
Gave Thiago Silva plenty to think and got the better of Marquinhos. Scored from less than six yards to open the scoring and constantly harassed the PSG backline.
Substitutes:
Thomas Muller (6):
Came on for Ribery with more than 20 minutes to go but failed to have a telling impact in the final third.
Arturo Vidal (6):
Replaced James Rodriguez to add some mettle to the midfield and did well to see off the lead.
Rafinha (N/A)
