Barcelona have been pretty steady in their approach to this season and they have been quite successful as the Catalans are on the top of the La Liga table. But gaffer Ernesto Valverde is likely to introduce some new faces as he wants to make a good use of the £200m they got from the sale of Neymar to Paris Saint Germain.
According to reports, Barcelona are ready to battle for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen. The Danish playmaker has emerged as a primary target for the Spanish side who are ready to take a deep plunge into the January transfer market.
Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho has been the subject of speculation as Barcelona had tried to sever his ties with the English outfit. But Jurgen Klopp was very clear with his instructions as the Reds held firm on the player and also rejected a mammoth £138m offer on the deadline day.
Coutinho’s arrival is looking bleak at the moment while the club have also pondered about the availability of Arsenal no. 10 Mesut Ozil. The German international’s contract is about to end at the end of this season and he is unlikely to extend his stay at the club.
Ozil could be a new arrival at the club but there is nothing concrete about it. Ousmane Dembele’s injury has prioritised the signing of an attacking midfielder and Eriksen fits the bill perfectly.
Eriksen’s value has only increased in the last few seasons and alongside Dele Alli and Harry Kane he has taken Spurs to another level. Eriksen’s quality has somewhat not been fully exploited and in a club like Barcelona, he will have the chance to make an even bigger and larger impact at the Camp Nou.
Andres Iniesta’s form is very inconsistent and the Spanish maestro who recently signed a lifetime contract doesn’t seem to have the drive to take the side forward. Therefore the Catalans have decided to go big in January and Eriksen could be one of the many arrivals.
The 25-year-old has a contract running till 2020 and it would be hard to secure a deal for him. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is known as a tough negotiator and he would certainly quote the best price available for him.
Despite this, he is likely to cost much less what Liverpool have been demanding to release Coutinho and in current circumstances, Eriksen would be a much better bet to gamble for.
