The match ended 1-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates who progress to the semi-finals of the League Cup.
The game started off at a pretty slow tempo with neither side attacking with much threat. The Gunners upped the ante towards the interval and should have been ahead through Walcott. However, Welbeck lifted his team-mate off the hook with a strike in the 42nd minute.
Arsenal started the second half with more confidence and controlled the majority of the possession. They looked for a second goal to kill the West Ham resistance but could not manage one with a lot of wasted opportunities. The Hammers did not offer a great deal in this contest and faded into the loss without much of a fight.
Player Ratings :
David Ospina – 6/10
Collected a few stray balls but otherwise an uneventful day at the job.
Calum Chambers – 8/10
Maintained his composure at the back and did not allow Javier Hernandez an inch of space in the Arsenal box.
Rob Holding – 7/10
Paired up with Chambers perfectly to read the West Ham attacks early.
Mathieu Debuchy – 6/10
Played a few good balls into the box including the headed assist.
Sead Kolasinac – 7/10
Good on the offensive end with good deliveries into the box. Defensively did not allow the Hammers to operate from the left.
Mohamed Elneny – 5/10
Defensively astute performance but lacked quality on the Arsenal attacks. His distribution was also not the best.
Francis Coquelin – 6/10
Worked perfectly to fill the gaps in the midfield position and pass the ball early whenever possible.
Joseph Willock – 6/10
An impressive start by the 19-year-old. Good distribution skills and an ability to take defenders on, but lost the ball on multiple possessions. Will definitely improve with more game time.
Theo Walcott – 4/10
A lacklustre performance from Walcott. He should have scored on multiple occasions but ended up giving the ball away most of the time.
Olivier Giroud – 6/10
Sad to see him pull up in the later stages with a hamstring injury, but nevertheless a good showing from the Frenchman. He did the dutiful but a lack of quality service made him less of a threat.
Danny Welbeck – 7/10
The goal puts him on the front line to get the man of the match award but without it a quite poor display. He was well-positioned on the Arsenal attacks and worked tirelessly to break the West Ham defence but his touches on the ball let him down.
