Chelsea are reportedly set to be offered Brazilian winger Lucas Moura by Paris Saint Germain. Lucas joined PSG after a lot of hype in the summer of 2012 with Manchester United and Inter Milan also chasing his signature. Paris ended up luring the player after paying £38 m for his services. He has gone on to make 228 appearances for the club and has scored 46 goals and created 48 more in those matches.
The big money signing was expected to become one of the best midfielders in the world but the little winger with an excellent dribbling skill is yet to live up to his potential.
PSG spend close to £200 million in transfers this summer and are likely to list a host of big names on their selling list to balance the books. Reports suggest that Lucas is one of them and PSG are likely to settle for a meagre fee as long as the deal is done promptly.
The arrival of Neymar, Mbappe, Draxler and Di Maria over the last two seasons has seen Lucas lose his first-team chances. With the Brazilian falling down the pecking order, a move for the winger could be possible in the January window.
After Chelsea’s failure in the summer transfer window, the club is lacking a senior attacking player. The club would hope to appease Antonio Conte by bringing in Lucas. Conte’s switch to a 3-5-2 formation this season has left Chelsea short of players in their attacking positions.
Chelsea currently have Pedro, Hazard, Willian and young Charly Musonda as the wingers in the senior team. While Hazard is untouchable on the team the same cannot be said for the rest of the three options. Musonda is very clearly a backup option opted for by Conte due to lack of summer signings.
The case for Pedro and Willian is that both players are highly inconsistent and have a habit of disappearing from matches. While Pedro puts in an effort to make something happen, Willian simply over-complicates matters for himself every time he gets the ball. The Brazilian does not release the ball soon enough and cannot be counted as a first team starter by any margin. Pedro despite his efforts is far away from adding the quality Chelsea need at the top.
This might prompt Lucas to move to the west London club where he is likely to get a lot more game time. His move to Chelsea will bring in some much-needed creativity to The Pensioners.
