As long as Liverpool keep defending the way they are at the moment, the stocks for defenders are going to be on the rise for The Reds. Liverpool are now interested in acquiring the services of young Turkish starlet Caglar Söyüncü currently playing for Bundesliga side SC Freiburg. The youngsters’ bright start to his Bundesliga career has alerted many clubs including Manchester United and Manchester City.
The 21-year-old’s performances this season have been quite noteworthy. Standing at 187cm, the Turk is a huge presence at the heart of the defence. Being on the bench for Freiburg’s first 2 league games, he has started the other 8, which displays the faith the manager has in him. The Turk is alien to any foreign language says that his manager understands the language of football and so does he. So, communication hasn’t been the biggest of problems for Söyüncü.
Söyüncü is a great header of the ball, evident in his goal against Hoffenheim which helped Freiburg to a 3-2 victory. His aerial presence is not only daunting in set pieces, but also a huge asset to have defensively. Taller, powerful centre-backs are vital for Premier League clubs given the pace and physicality the league is known for. These are attributes that are more so important for Liverpool who are extremely vulnerable at defending set pieces. They look hardly convincing and as a result, teams set out to exploit their weakness time and time again.
Liverpool’s defenders are guilty of not clearing the ball away and seeking respite. Söyüncü can help solve that area as well as he’s known for his clearing headers.
Once again Liverpool’s depth in the defensive positions will be questioned. If you want to be contending for the title, a strong defence is an inevitable priority. Added to that, their participation in the Champions League this season is going to drain out the players and ask a lot of them. Söyüncü addition could most certainly strengthen their wearing-out defence crying out for fresh faces.
The lack of a world-class defender in Liverpool’s ranks has probably hampered the competition. As such Lovren and Matip are Liverpool’s first choice defenders. Even though they both have made individual errors at the back, one would still see the same faces come out of the tunnel and put on the red shirt. Although Jurgen states that he is confident with the players at hand, it is pretty much a strategy to take the firing line off them simply because he has nobody to turn to. Defensive reinforcements have to be the German’s priority come January.
Should Jurgen sign this Turkish youngster?
