Celtic, under the stewardship of Brendan Rodgers, are a team on the rise and they have indeed constructed a strong footing for themselves in the domestic competitions. The Celts clinched the domestic treble last season and have been fantastic in the Scottish Premiership so far this season as well, having collected 30 points from 12 outings so far in the Scottish top flight.
However, one of the aspects they have failed to cater for quite some time now is to better their credentials in the Champions League. The Hoops haven’t been able to replicate their domestic form in Europe’s elite club competition, something that Brendan Rodgers has been attempting to do. After their 1-2 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich last week, Celtic have once again failed to get into the knockout stages.
Although the game against the Bavarians earned them a lot of appraisals, it was the Craig Gordon’s blunder which played a pivotal role in their defeat in a game where they could have shared points with one of the mega-clubs of the continent. Rodgers is keen to beef up his arsenal and in one of his recent interviews, he stated that bringing a top-class custodian would hold paramount importance in January.
In such a scenario, Michel Vorm is someone whom the former Liverpool manager could try to lure to the Celtic Park. Having emerged through the youth ranks of JSV Nieuwegein, Vorm started to attract a lot of attention from the football fraternity during his spell with the senior side of Utretch, which then tempted Swansea City to bring him to the Liberty Stadium.
Eventually, Tottenham Hotspur signed him in the summer of 2014, but the shot-stopper has been nothing more than a deputy to Hugo Lloris. Despite being one of the top goalkeepers in the Premier League whilst his tenure with the Swans, Vorm has been sparingly used by the Lilywhites and considering that his contract expires at the end of the season, the Bhoys should look to make him sign on the dotted line in January or next summer.
The 34-year-old Dutch international was linked with Celtic last year and frankly speaking, Rodgers’ side can offer him the last shot that he deserves in his career. Gordon has been a reliable man between the sticks in the domestic competitions, but he has been timorous at times in the Champions League. Besides, Celtic do need to offer him substantial competition for the no.1 goalkeeper’s stature and someone like Vorm, who has adequate experience under his belt, would perfectly fit the bill.
