In the English Premier League, Spurs have been condemned to three defeats in four big games with the only win coming against Liverpool. Losses to Manchester United, Chelsea and most recently to their bitter rivals Arsenal have left everyone questioning the credibility of the young Tottenham Hotspur side to actually deliver when it matters.
The Spurs side set out to put things right in the league after a euphoric week in the Champions League that confirmed their position as the group winners after remaining unbeaten after five matches, in what was considered to be one of the toughest groups this season.
A 1-1 result was not what Pochettino had in mind when his side began the match against a lowly West Bromwich Albion who came into the match without a manager in charge. Pochettino’s men were made to toil hard to get the goal and had to chase the game for the most part having fallen behind to a Salomon Rondon goal in the fourth minute.
Spurs are falling behind the chasing pack in the league with Manchester United and Chelsea pulling away and Manchester City already gone far off. Moreover, they also have Liverpool and Arsenal breathing down their neck and if Pochettino’s men want to keep playing in the Champions League next season, they must get their act together in the league.
Here is a look at the player ratings for tonight’s match.
Hugo Lloris: 6.5
After the early goal conceded, he did not have much to do since most of the action took place in front of the West Bromwich Albion goal.
Davinson Sanchez: 6.5
The impressive signing needs a break soon otherwise he will soon run out of energy and not be able to put in many more decent performances. Was very easily outmuscled by Rondon tonight.
Eric Dier: 7
He was stable and controlling and started most of Tottenham’s attacks from deep within.
Jan Vertonghen: 6.5
Had nothing much to do in defence after the early goal scored by West Bromwich Albion
Ben Davies: 6.5
An average night, given the defender’s high standards of performance he has put in this season.
Kieran Trippier: 7
Put in endless crosses to try and get Spurs in on goal but did not have much success in doing so.
Harry Winks: 7
Was equally impressive alongside Dier in starting Tottenham’s attacks and kept the possession rolling every time a Tottenham attack failed.
Christian Eriksen: 5
A surprising performance and an off night for the impressive Dan, he was not up to his usual delivery standards.
Dele Alli: 5
A poor performance from a player of his quality and was responsible for losing possession for the first goal on the night
Heung-Min Son: 6
Was impressive with his movement and looked threatening when charging towards goal
Harry Kane: 6.5
A goal for Kane but that was it for the night as he failed to inspire them to a much-needed victory.
