Andrew Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in the summer for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million. It has only been a few months at the club and there has been talk of Robertson seeking time away from Anfield.
Liverpool’s last season was not bad by any margin. There were defensive problems Klopp was expected to address in the summer. However, the transfer market went by with Klopp buying another attacker and most importantly shielding Philippe Coutinho from the prying eyes of Barcelona.
He ended up with no addition to the existing crop of centre-halves at the team. His left back crisis arose last year with Alberto Moreno playing substandard football, which was expected to be solved with the arrival of Robertson.
Robertson was expected to take over from James Milner, who had played most of the last season as a makeshift fullback cover, for Klopp’s lack of options at left back. Milner is no longer playing in that position but Robertson is yet to become a regular at Anfield.
The reason for this is the arrival of Robertson seemed to woken up Alberto Moreno who has been in much better form this season. It has obviously delighted Klopp and the Kop. They are more than happy to have depth in that position, however, for Robertson, it has meant him missing out the n action.
Robertson at 23 has time to develop and missing a few months of games will not stagnate his career for good. However, Moreno is only 25 as well and that would mean Robertson could be in the stands for a long time to come. He has been left, not only out of the starting team, but also entire squad on most match days and it has led to the belief that Klopp does not really have plans for the Scottish left back.
Robertson however, had encouraging words for Moreno, James Milner had played left-back all last season and a lot people on the outside probably thought Moreno was finished at Liverpool, but he has worked really hard in training to get everything right. He has played well since he has been in there.”
“It has been frustrating for me because my signing has probably lifted him but I believe that it has given Liverpool two good left-backs.”
He also explained why Klopp has been been unable to fit him into the squad.
Klopp wants his left-back role “a specialist position” and would rather have his substitutes to be able to cover multiple positions.
“For me and Moreno, if we start, great; if we don’t, realistically we will be in the stand or not travelling,” Robertson said.
“We have attacking people on the bench who can come on and change the game, which we usually need.”
It is now being reported that despite having made zero impact at the club Klopp is unwilling to let go of the player in January on loan. Whether Klopp is just playing it safe in case of an injury or does not expect Moreno to hold on to his form and therefore expects Robertson to take over is unknown.
However, one way or the other, if Robertson continues to get the cold shoulder like this, the player will definitely grow impatient and force through a move. But do you think he should be sent out on loan in January?
