Bilbao midfielder Gorka Guruzeta is making quite a stir in the Spanish lower divisions this season. The Basque-born attacker, playing for Bilbao Atheltic, the reserve team for Spanish top division outfit Athletic Bilbao has attracted a lot of transfer interest with Chelsea and Tottenham reportedly vying for his signature.
Newcastle United, however, might also emerge as a possible suitor for the 21-year-old as head coach Rafa Benitez is claimed to be a huge admirer of the young forward. And with the North-East club reportedly on the verge of a huge takeover, which is supposed to be announced this week, Guruzeta joining the Magpies might not be a far-fetched proposition.
There are a number of reasons as to why should Newcastle really go after the highly talented Bilbao midfielder. One of which is the simple fact that the 21-year-old is clearly destined for top-flight football, thanks to his blistering performances in the Spanish third division. Therefore, it’s only a matter of time, before he gets promoted to the senior side of Athletic Bilbao.
As for Newcastle United, the Magpies do actually need a prolific striker, with players like Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ayoze Perez, and Joselu, constantly failing to keep up their consistent goal-scoring form in the league this season.
Indeed! Only Southampton(9) and Huddersfield(8) have scored fewer goals than the Magpies(10) among the Premier League’s top 15 so far this season.
While Gorka Guruzeta may not be the most prolific strikers around, the Bilbao attacker can certainly influence the game with his fantastic work rate, and possibly, pave the way for the likes of Joselu and Mitrovic to score more goals in the league.
One of the most impressive features for the young Guruzeta however, is the fact that he can play across any position in the offensive line, which, despite being a norm at Bilbao, can prove to be very useful later on, in his career and certainly, in the Premier League.
Gorka Guruzeta is a typical Spanish forward blessed with great technical abilities as well as having a knack for tracking back and help out his teammates in the midfield, which is perfectly suited for the English style of football.
Even though the Magpies are sitting pretty in the mid-table at the moment, the vultures of the Premier League definitely has the potential to completely tear apart their so far successful season and their lack of scoring prowess is one of the aspects they need to improve upon, if they are to evade the wrath of the Premier League. And that’s why the addition of Gorka Guruzeta would be a step in the right direction for the Newcastle board.
