Everton are in absolute dire straits in their Premier League campaign this season, having won only three matches out of their first eleven, which sees them to stand on a lowly position in the league table. However, a much-needed win in their last match against Watford was a desperate attempt to claw back up the ladder and help them to stay away from the dreaded zone of relegation.
Their disastrous start to the season has already taken its toll on their manager Ronald Koeman, who was sacked in the last month following the dismal performance of his newly built side. The squad is now being managed by the interim coach David Unsworth, who has not been able to change the fate of the team yet.
The Merseyside club is looking to bring in a new manager and they are eyeing a number of options from the Premier League as well as Championship. Reportedly, they had approached Nuno Espirito Santo, the manager of the current league leaders in the second tier, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
But the Portuguese was unbaffled by the offer to manage a top flight club and preferred to stay back in the Championship with the Wolves, who have a good chance of making it to the top flight by the end of the season.
This has led the club to look for other options and they are currently zeroing on the former Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce. Reportedly, the former England manager has expressed interest in managing the Merseyside club for the rest of the season and also had a meeting with owner Farhad Moshirri recently.
The inclusion of “Big Sam” might be a good ploy for the Toffees as they can bank upon his experience to get themselves out of trouble. He has done that earlier in his career as well, the best example being for his former club Crystal Palace in the last term, who were sinking fast. They fought their way back to stay back in the top flight under the inspiring stewardship of the Englishman.
However, in the run to find the successor for Ronald Koeman, there is the name of another Englishman, Craig Shakespeare, who was sacked by Leicester City following their dismal start to the season in the last month as well. The wily manager led the team out of trouble in the last term after the unceremonious sacking of their Premier League winning gaffer Claudio Ranieri and could do the same with the Toffees as well, as he might be instilled as the No.2 to Allardyce.
