Wolves’ coach Nuno Espirito Santo is unlikely to take the Everton offer to become their new coach, according to reports. The Portuguese manager was tipped as the frontrunner to replace Ronald Koeman at the Goodison Park, but he has no intention of leaving Wolves at this moment.
This season, the Premier League saw a number of managers being fired by clubs and Everton were the latest to enter that category. Despite splashing money in the summer, Koeman failed to carve a niche.
The Dutch gaffer was backed by new owner Farhad Moshiri at the beginning of this season but a string of poor displays forced the club to show him the door. On the back of a very positive last season, sustained development was supposed to be the springboard to their success but it has proved to be an awful campaign so far, as the Toffees are currently languishing in the relegation zone.
The club hierarchy doesn’t want to rush things now and has given Everton’s academy and under-23s manager David Unsworth the job. The Toffees’ loyalists is also touted to be in the managerial race but the Merseyside club are likely to appoint an experienced name, maybe even in the international break.
Santo indicated he is not interested in the job as his primary focus is Wolves. “When you sign a contract, you must respect that contract and anyone who knows me personally knows what kind of man I am and my beliefs
“It’s not only me, we’re talking about a lot of people. New players coming in, new ownership, it’s a project,” he said in a recent interview.
So it seems The Toffees’ have missed out on him and will now have to look elsewhere.
Wolves are currently in the driver’s seat in the Championship and are one of the contenders to seal an automatic qualification spot. They are leading the table by one point to Cardiff City and are looking threatening in the second tier.
The Championship outfit had the busiest summer, as the new owners splashed out the cash in the transfer window in a bid to fight for the promotion and have not been disappointed so far. Santo’s managerial skills have blended well with the Wolves’ players and together, they have been doing wonders in the Championship.
So it seems the Portuguese manager is right to reject the offer, as they certainly have a very good chance to get back to the top tier after a long gap. Everton, on the other hand, could fall into the second tier so do you think Santo is right in rejecting Everton?
