It seems the story of the famous fax machine fiasco between Real Madrid and Manchester United is about to have yet another twist to its tale. Real Madrid had come very close to securing the signature of Spanish stopper David De Gea in the summer of 2015. It involved a swap deal with Keylor Navas moving to Manchester United and David De Gea to Real Madrid.
The goalkeeper, himself, had expressed his interest in completing a move to the Spanish capital and United it seemed had lost yet another superstar to Perez.
However, a late twist to the drama saw the move collapse in the eleventh hour and De Gea not only stayed at United for the time being but the Red Devil’s board managed to convince the Spaniard to sign a new four-year contract. Real moved away for the time being and stopped chasing De Gea.
After the end of this current season, De Gea will be entering his final twelve months at Manchester and it is now being reported that Real Madrid are patiently waiting in the wings to come in with another offer for the 27-year old. Keylor Navas has performed extremely well for Real Madrid in the interim, however, it seems Madrid want more.
The Costa Rican custodian has been an integral part of Zinedine Zidane’s two-time Champions League winning team. However, as is always the case with Real, there is something more needed than just good performances to become a hero at Santiago Bernabeu.
The first and foremost problem Real have with their custodian is the fact Navas is north of 30 and does not have a long career ahead of him. This has prompted the Spanish outfit to look for other options despite Navas being in terrific form in goal.
The second and final reason for Real to not follow up with Navas is because the Costa Rican lacks the superstar factor needed to become a Real Madrid player. The players in Real are not just footballers but celebrities followed by the world.
The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Marcelo, Toni Kroos, Isco are “Galacticos” and they must at all times maintain this standard in terms of their celebrity like lifestyle; something Navas has been unable to do.
David De Gea, on the other hand, has been United’s saviour in goal for the last four seasons and he is arguably the best shot-stopper in the game right now alongside Manuel Neuer. It makes sense for a club of Madrid’s profile to chase the best and with the player himself being a Spaniard, a move back to his homeland can certainly not be ruled out.
