Scottish Premiership outfit, Rangers, are in the hunt to sign a permanent manager after the departure of Pedro Caixinha, and as per one of the latest reports by The Daily Star, the Glasgow-based are apparently eyeing former Newcastle United manager, Steve McClaren. The Gers are in the dire need of bagging a gaffer who can navigate them in the right direction and McClaren has emerged as one of the latest names for catering to Rangers’ managerial needs.
Caixinha’s reign never took off in the manner which the club would have hoped for. During his tenure at the Ibrox Stadium, the Portuguese seemed bereft of anything stupendous. He took the charge after Mark Warburton’s mysterious in the second half of last season but failed to impose a strong footing for himself. His troops suffered humiliation when they were dumped out of the Europa League by Luxembourg minnows, Progres Niderkorn, and it was indeed a huge embarrassment for them.
Further, during his spell, his players succumbed in all three of the Old Firm derbies against their arch rivals, Celtic, and the gap between these two clubs kept raising. Besides, Rangers were eliminated from the League Cup by Motherwell and eventually, the 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock proved to be the final nail in the coffin for Caixinha. After what transpired during the reign of Caixinha, the Light Blues must be more cautious from here, as a wrong decision would really hinder their prospects of resurrection.
McClaren is someone who has plenty of experience under his belt and is currently associated with Maccabi Tel Aviv as a coaching consultant. He has managed some notable clubs like Newcastle United, Middlesbrough, Twente and Derby County and does have the pedigree to lead a club like Rangers. However, the caveat is that he couldn’t taste much of success in most of his endeavours and isn’t accustomed to Scottish football and thus, there would certainly be an element of risk involved.
At this stroke of hour, Graeme Murty is appointed as the interim manager of Rangers and under his stewardship, two wins on trot (against Heart of Midlothian and Patrick Thistle) have been registered. The incoming of Derek McInnes doesn’t seem very likely to materialize owing to the reluctance of Rangers to meet the £750,000 compensation fee. Thus, it would be interesting to see who gets appointed, with the intensity of race being beefed up further with the entry of McClaren in the list.
