Newcastle United have succumbed to defeat against Bournemouth in a game they were expected to come out with all three points. A last-gasp winner from Steve Cook gave the visitors the win in, which otherwise would have been a stalemate. Having started the first half brightly, Newcastle looked well on course but faded as the second half began. We take a look at the player ratings of Newcastle United.
Robert Elliot (7):
Made a couple of fantastic saves that kept Newcastle in the game to clinch all three points but could do nothing about the goal from Steve Cook’s header.
DeAndre Yedlin (6):
Was not tested much by the Bournemouth wingers. Stuck to his defensive task well.
Jamaal Lascelles (7):
Had another very good game as he ensured that his defence did not open up by the front runners of Josh King and Callum Wilson. Was extremely solid at the back. Limped off injured just before the hour mark.
Florian Lejeune (7):
Was tested immensely by the pace of King and Wilson when on the counter and at times when the ball was played down the channels. Did well to stand his ground and did not give them a sight of goal.
Javier Manquillo (6):
Did alright defensively but lacked the patience and composure when on the ball. Gave away a few silly freekicks when a challenge was unnecessary.
Matt Ritchie (8):
Newcastle’s best player on the pitch by a mile. Had his fantastically driven shot saved brilliantly by Begovic and was unlucky to hit the woodwork with a curling effort. Posed a huge threat going forward.
Isaac Hayden (6.5):
Did well to win many headers from goal kicks and was sharp to the loose ball. Could have used the ball better to find his attackers.
Jonjo Shelvey (7):
A good display in the middle of the park for the Englishman. Went for the Hollywood pass a little too much but looked extremely positive by looking for the forward pass all the time.
Christian Atsu (7):
Used his pace and directness to good effect in the first half running at the Bournemouth defenders. Much like his colleagues, his game too faded away come the second half.
Dwight Gayle (6):
Not quite his night. Tried to link up play with Joselu but to no good effect. Pressed the Bournemouth defenders well and hurried them into clearances.
Joselu (6):
Again should have done better on the ball to link up play. But his aerial presence was notable and one that Bournemouth had to be wary of.
Substitutes:
Ciaran Clark (7):
Brought on for Lascelles around the hour mark. Did his defensive job to perfection until the goal where he failed to mark his man that eventually led them to drop points.
Ayoze Perez (6):
Did not have much of an impact. Much of his work went into defending as Bournemouth were dominating play in the final third of the game.
Jacob Murphy (NA):
Played very little part in the game to have a rating.
