Newcastle United might have a very scrappy summer transfer window but their performance in this season has defied all the odds. Rafa Benitez has managed to turn the wheels with a very limited budget but the gaffer will be looking to add a few more players in the coming winter transfer window.
In a very shocking event of incidents Atletico Madrid forward Fernando Torres has been linked with a possible move back to Premier League and Newcastle have emerged as a possible destination courtesy to Benitez.
The 33-year-old hasn’t been used much as he has started just two games for Atleti and with Diego Costa scheduled to arrive in January his game time could be under sheer danger and a short-term deal would be perfect for him.
Benitez is very well acquainted with Torres’ capability as the pair worked with absolute precision and understanding during their heavily successful time at Anfield and would love to recall their partnership once again in the Premier League.
The Spanish hitman returned to his boyhood club in 2016 but his position at the club is yet to be defined and the Spanish international is planning to make a short return to English top flight football to bid one final goodbye to the league that brought the best out of him.
Torres is very eager to honour his commitment with Atleti but also wants to be in continuous touch with regular game time which is looking very scarce at this moment. Torres has 18 months left on his current contract and he is likely to hang up his boots after the next campaign.
Southampton are also reportedly in the race due to Torres’ relation with Mauricio Pellegrino. They know each other during their time at Anfield when the Saints gaffer was an assistant with Benitez.
Benitez does have room in his squad to fit in a new striker as new arrival Joselu is yet to strike gold while Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dwight Gayle have had their problems. Torres’ arrival could kick-start a spending spree at the St James Park in January.
Newcastle could have their new owner by the end of this New Year as Amanda Staveley and her company PCP Capital Partners are ready to take the helm and the move will be welcomed by the gaffer as he is likely to be sanctioned a war chest to boost his side’s chances in the top tier.
Benitez has prioritised the addition of a striker and Torres could be reunited with his former boss and together they can create history.
