Manchester United got off to an exciting start this season. After a heavy-spending-summer, that saw the club spend in excess of £150m, Manchester United currently are sitting in the second position in the league.
Although their shock defeat to Huddersfield Town put some gap between them and table toppers Manchester City, the result is a one-off and Mourinho’s men jumped right back into winning ways by beating Tottenham 1-0 at home and continuing their perfect record in the Champions League until yesterday’s defeat to Chelsea put another break on their momentum.
However, they are far off from losing their way in the title chase and a couple of quick wins will again put them on the heels of City who might lose momentum in the coming weeks with every club across Europe trying to gun them down. It is now being reported that Mourinho is looking to add further depth and strength to his squad and French central defender Raphael Varane has become a target for Manchester United.
Mourinho was desperate for a centre-back signing in the summer but the arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica gave the Portuguese tactician a certain break from his worries. However, with Lindelof unable to hit the ground running, Real Madrid’s French defender may become a priority signing.
Currently, the Red Devils have Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo who can play in the centre back position. It will be interesting to see Mourinho adjust another centre back into the side. United also have makeshift cover at the middle of the park in the form of Daley Blind and Nemanja Matic as well.
Raphael Varane’s arrival would see him walk straight into the starting line-up and that would mean either Jones or Smalling losing their place as Bailly is expected to be the other centre-half in Mourinho’s backline.
The Real Madrid man is all quality and has already cemented a starting spot in Zidane’s Galacticos side at the age of 24. Varane was initially brought in to Madrid by Mourinho who beat Sir Alex Ferguson to the signing of the talented Frenchman back in 2011.
The young teenager impressed largely under Jose and kept pushing for a first-team spot. This season with Pepe leaving he has become a first-team starter and has been impressive in his outings so far. The talented centre-back is one of the fastest defenders on the ball across Europe and has a bright future ahead of him.
Back in March, he spoke about his special relationship with Mourinho and it will not be surprising to see him reunited with his old boss, who according to reports has asked Varane to make his wish to leave Real public, in a bid to help ease his access to Manchester.
