According to Mirror, Manchester City have finally joined the race for Schalke’s contract rebel, the superbly talented Leon Goretzka. The Citizens joins the list, which includes the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Juventus and Bayern Munich, in the race to sign Schalke’s midfield prodigy.
Goretzka has been in amazing form of late. After helping his nation win the FIFA Confederations Cup this summer, the midfielder deserves significant credit behind Schalke’s renaissance under new boss Domenico Tedesco this season.
However, despite being in great form, the 22-year-old hasn’t been shy about making his feelings known, as desperately wanting to make the next step in his career at the end of this season. His current contract with the Royal Blues expires at the end of this season and the midfielder has no intention of extending his contract at the Veltins Arena, meaning he could be available for a free transfer next summer.
Leon Goreztka could be a stunning acquisition for Manchester City, in particular. Even though the Citizens are playing their best football in over a decade, the current Premier League leaders, do, however, need some quality reinforcements to plug out a few holes in the squad.
At the very moment, Pep Guardiola is in dire need of some protection for the backline. Fernandinho has been a decent performer for the club, over the years, but with City stepping up their game to the next level, one would think that they need an upgrade in the holding midfield position as well. And Goretzka could be the man Guardiola is looking for.
The Schalke midfield sensation is an absolute architect in the centre of the pitch. Despite being just 22, Goretzka’s level of tactical understanding and maturity is well beyond his years. Not only he can provide some solid cover for the backline, but the 22-year-old also has the ability to provide that verve going forward.
Leon Goretzka is often the scourge of many midfielders, largely thanks to his intimidating presence in the middle third. The Schalke super-talent also has terrific ball carrying ability as well as a brilliant passing range, both of which suits it very well under the playing philosophy of the ex-Catalan gaffer.
Overall, Manchester City will no doubt be boosted by the acquisition of Leon Goretzka. The highly talented German International can provide all the necessary services in the middle of the park, which Guardiola is seeking at the moment. And unlike Fernandinho, Goretzka, 22, can be a huge prospect for Manchester in the future.
