Eduardo Berizzo’s men managed to salvage a point late in the game for the second time against Liverpool this season as Jurgen Klopp’s men managed to squander a healthy, 3-goal lead, they accumulated before the half-time whistle. Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane scored identical goals to put the visitors two up in just 20 minutes and the Brazilian added a third to keep the travelling fans signing their way to the break.
However, Wissam Ben Yedder gave Sevilla hope with a brace and a late goal from Pizzaro marked a remarkable comeback from the hosts. Alberto Moreno was once again the villain against his former club and here are the player ratings for the Reds in this tie:
Loris Karius (7/10):
Made a couple of superb saves to keep his side in the hunt and was generally aware of most of the danger. Could not do much to stop any of the goals.
Joe Gomez (5/10):
Was caught out of possession and under the ball far too often, giving Sevilla enough time to create chances from his side of the field.
Dejan Lovren (7/10):
Won more than his share of balls in the air and was quick to cut out any danger. Could have done well for at least couple of the goals but an impressive night for the Croatian.
Ragnar Klavan (5/10):
Culpable for the final goal, missing his header from the corner but also found it tough when the home side piled up the pressure in the second half.
Alberto Moreno (3/10):
After a decent first half, the home-town boy managed to gift his former side a couple of goals, making a couple of fouls in and around the box, which Ben Yedder managed to take full advantage off. Had to be subbed off.
Jordan Henderson (4/10):
Decent with his duties in the middle of the field but lack of communication and leadership from Liverpool’s skipper is what ended up snatching two points from his side.
Georginio Wijnaldum (5/10):
Was all over the Sevilla midfield in the first half and did well even in the second, where he put in the hard yards, till late in the game.
Philippe Coutinho (6/10):
Played a couple of superb passes to Salah and Mane in the first half but lost the ball far too often to his side’s liking.
Mohamed Salah (6/10):
An unusually calm night for the Egyptian, who was effective in the buildup play all night but failed to get on to the score-sheet.
Sadio Mane (7/10):
A sublime header brought the Senegalese back among the goals and he was a constant threat on the counter, even late in the game, as Sevilla pushed for the equalizer.
Roberto Firmino (8/10):
Scored a couple of goals, albeit tap-ins and won the ball back a number of times on a night when he was the best player for his side.
Substitutes:
Emre Can (5/10):
Put in a shift in the midfield replacing Coutinho, as Klopp decided to hold on to a slender lead. Should have found Mane when 3-2 up to finish the game in the second half.
James Milner (5/10):
Replaced Moreno after his nightmare but was ineffective in keeping the home side from finding space down the left side of the defence.
Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain (5/10):
Was inside his own half most of the game, coming on with 10 minutes from time.
