Liverpool’s season have been sailing pretty smoothly so far as Jurgen Klopp’s side have enthralled the audience with some breathtaking attacking football this season.
With the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho in the side the Reds have enlightened the Premier League with a new brand of football.
But for Klopp, there have been some concerns which need to be taken care of. Leaky defence proved to be a stumbling block to what otherwise has been a superlative campaign for them.
While defence kept them pretty much on the back foot, Klopp is likely to refurbish his defence in January. According to reports, Liverpool are keeping a watch on Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez.
The Reds have been on the lookout for a defender who would be able to pull the plug on their leaky defence and have identified the Spanish defender. The four times capped Spanish international might not be a popular name but his game reading sense and no-nonsense defending have made him a household name in the La Liga.
He has been with Sociedad since the start of his football career and has spent his entire career so far in Spain. Joel Matip has been a steady performer in the backline for the Merseyside club but the likes of Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan have been pretty erratic in form as they both have had their difficulties in coping with the growing competitiveness of the Premier League.
Standing at five feet eleven, the 26-year-old might not be the tallest of a defender but he has a reasonably good presence in the air and is equally effective in initiating the attack from the backline.
But Liverpool’s potential interest could be spoiled by Barcelona who are back in business again. The Catalans are reportedly interested in the player and are ready to rival Liverpool in his signature.
Javier Mascherano is unlikely to stay at the club beyond this season while Thomas Vermaelen’s future is not so secure at the Nou Camp it seems. So the Spanish giants don’t want to take a risk.
Martinez has featured in more than 200 matches for Sociedad and has never tested his patience outside Spain but Liverpool are all set to bring him to England as Klopp is looking to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
It now depends on whether Klopp would he be able to crack a deal for the Spanish defender or not.
