Everton’s season has been horrific as everything seemed to have gone wrong for the Merseyside club. The Merseyside club were hoping to exceed their last season’s performance but things have been pretty underwhelming this term.
Following a huge squad overhaul, the Toffees have been equipped with all the necessary requirements but former manager Ronald Koeman lost the plot completely as he failed to assemble a side who would be able to challenge the other Premier League clubs.
Following Koeman’s dismissal, U23 manager David Unsworth has been given the charge but he has failed to pull the plug on their misery as Everton were hammered 4-1 by a ruthless Southampton in their last match.
It was perhaps their one of the worst displays this season and it became very evident they badly need a new manager as things are not working out for Unsworth.
Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has emerged as a surprise candidate. The 40-year-old is currently busy with Shanghai SIPG in the Chinese Super League and it is not yet clear whether the club have made an official approach or not.
A number of managers have been linked with the Toffees job but Villas-Boas is the latest to have been linked with them. He was at the helm of Tottenham Hotspur for a single season.
Villas-Boas’ first season in the far east ended without a silverware and the lure of managing in the Premier League could be too hard to resist for the manager who hasn’t seen success in the English top tier.
However, latest reports suggest that the Portuguese tactician has resigned from his post at the Chinese club and is willing to take a break from football for the time being. This might rue the chances of getting him as a new manager for the Merseyside club in the near future.
Farhad Moshiri has already taken the initiative and he is leading the charge as he has made it sure Everton are on the verge of appointing a new manager. “The first priority is to stabilise the club and finalise the appointment of a manager. We are close.”
Unsworth could have been the manager for the remainder of the season but five defeats during his interim reign have ruined his chances. Given his lacklustre managerial career, Villas-Boas’ stake is not high at the moment but Everton could take a big bet by appointing him who was once touted to be the ideal successor of Jose Mourinho.
