Everton’s shambolic season found some respite as the Toffees came from behind to register a 3-2 win over Watford in the last match in the Premier League. This was a very rare event given the Toffees’ miserable form this season.
Following the stupendous last season, there was hope of a positive outcome as Ronald Koeman brought a very good vibe at the Goodison Park since his appointment. The Dutch manager won accolades for his brand of attacking and possession-based football and led the Merseyside club to a seventh-place finish.
But this season it wasn’t the same as he failed to keep the juggernaut rolling and as a result, he had to part ways with the club. David Unsworth has been taking care of the side for the time being but the club hierarchy is likely to appoint a full-time manager very soon.
A number of names have been hovering around with the latest being Diego Simeone as per reports. The Argentine has been one of the most coveted managers in the European circuit and has reestablished Atletico Madrid on the footballing map.
This might be an outrageous attempt from the club who now have the financial stability to pull it off. The Merseyside’s club meteoric rise in the last few years cannot be ignored but still, they haven’t done enough to match the stature of the Premier League biggies which could be a block in their way.
Majority stakeholder invested a lot since he took over the club and his ambitious approach saw the club going wholeheartedly into the transfer market.
Simeone has been well heralded by Atleti but the prospect of managing a club like Everton would be too hard to resist.
However, Simeone signed a new contract in September which runs until 2020 and it would need some massive convincing from the Merseyside club to lure him out of Wanda Metropolitano.
Everton have the necessary ammunition and resources which would be needed on their road of survival and all they need is a manager who would be able to get the best out of them as Simeone looks perfect from all aspects.
If Simeone is to come he would have to be offered a lucrative long-term deal. Everton have failed to make it to the next stages of Europa League and their absence in Europe could play a pivotal role in this move.
However, Everton could make a fresh approach in the summer if they manage to stay afloat in the top tier, though it is too soon to comment on that.
