Callum Wilson’s football career had been pretty bumpy but he is having a fairytale ride this season. The Bournemouth striker netted a hat-trick against Huddersfield Town, which was his second Premier League start following an almost nine-month long injury layoff.
Wilson ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the left knee and had been on the sidelines as he went through a rigorous rehabilitation process. The journey must have been difficult but the 25-year-old stayed strong and believed in himself.
The striker also had the same injury back in 2015 but at that time it was the other leg and when the latest injury occurred, everybody thought he won’t be the same player again.
But the 25-year-old proved everyone wrong and made a blasting comeback for the Cherries. The Coventry City graduate has had his fair share of injury problems but he didn’t let them interrupted his career prospects as it seemed.
Eddie Howe rates the player very highly and since he has returned the gaffer has been using him a quite regularly. He has been with the club since 2014 and despite his injury concerns the club stood beside him and the result is clearly evident.
Wilson was one of the main players who inspired the Cherries in their promotional battle. Wilson hit 20 goals as the Cherries finished the season at the top to earn an automatic qualification to the Premier League and currently it is the third season running for the Cherries in the top tier.
If Wilson continues to grab goals England boss Gareth Southgate might be interested in giving the striker a place in his World Cup squad. It might sound awkward but Wilson is the first English forward to hit a hat-trick this term.
A place in the Russia bound plane might be up for grabs and Eddie Howe believes Wilson has the ability to do the impossible. “Callum would want me to champion his cause, of course, but I am just happy for him that he is looking so good and scoring goals in our team.
“I would love all my players who represent their countries to go to the World Cup. If Callum carries on the type of form he showed against Huddersfield and Newcastle then it is in his hands.”
Bournemouth shrugged off their bad start and have been climbing the table steadily. If Wilson is given a good run of games he can lead the Cherries back to their glory days.
