When Jack Wilshere returned to the Emirates following a moderately successful loan stint with Bournemouth, he had hoped for a change of fortunes. However, in a sad turn of events for the Englishman, Arsene Wenger has used the midfielder sporadically this season in the Premier League and it could have an immediate effect on his National Team career.
Wilshere was ignored by Gareth Southgate as the England manager picked his squad for the upcoming friendlies against Germany and Brazil. It might send a strong message to Wilshere who has a strong desire to be back to the England fold but in the current circumstances, it is looking a bit difficult.
According to reports, Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson could be interested in the English international. The South London club are on a barren run in the Premier League as they have failed to get it going in the top tier. Relegation is looming large for the Eagles, who have lacked the intent throughout this season.
Hodgson has a special relationship with the midfielder as the latter was being handpicked by him at the time of the European Championship but a miserable campaign ended his reign as the England manager. Palace remained on the edge as Hodgson’s side are at the bottom of the Premier League table and in a bid to steer his side towards safety, the former Three Lions manager might demand some new players in January.
Hodgson’s imminent requirement would be to strengthen the middle of the pitch and Wilshere could bring a sense of assurance at the Selhurst Park. The 25-year-old is one of the best English talents to have played in the big league but has never justified his talent barring some flashes of brilliance.
He has been used mostly in Cup games and the Europa League and is yet to start a game in the Premier League. If the situation worsens in future he can call it a day at the Emirates and might prefer to reunite with his former boss. Wilshere needs to assess his knack for getting injured frequently but he has shown if he gets a good run, he can be a very decent option.
With less than seven months left on his contract, the Gunners could be ready to offload him for a small profit rather than losing him for free in next summer. Southgate has made it pretty clear Wilshere needs to have regular game time to be in contention for a playoff berth and it seems Hodgson is easing Southgate’s work.
