Borussia Dortmund suffered a humiliating 3:1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the first ever Klassiker of the season. League leaders Bayern dominated the game throughout the game as Dortmund found it difficult to find openings in the final third.
Arjen Robben’s opener made an early impact in the proceedings while Robert Lewandowski made it 2:0 just before the half-time whistle. David Alaba’s cross went straight into the back of the net in the second half. At the end, however, Marc Bartra managed to score a terrific goal, which only proved to be a mere consolation for the home side.
Here are the Dortmund players rated and slated in their disappointing defeat against Bayern Munich.
Roman Burki (8/10): Made some sensational saves throughout the game, including a save from Robert Lewandowski from point-blank range. Wasn’t to be blamed for conceding three goals, as Dortmund’s backline were pretty underwhelming.
Marc Bartra (6/10): Started the game brightly as the former Barcelona man kept out Kingsley Coman on the right flank but started to lose shape just after Bayern’s opener. However, he did manage to score a truly sensational goal late in the game.
Sokratis (7/10): Was looking very solid until he took a knock and had to be replaced, which initiated a string of imbalance in the Dortmund backline.
Omer Toprak (6/10): Looked good at times defending the likes of Arjen Robben but overall, the Turkish International failed to stop the attacking onslaught from the opposition.
Marcel Schmelzer (6/10): Was rather absent in his offensive duties even though he actually did quite well to minimize the threat of Arjen Robben and Joshua Kimmich on the left flank.
Julian Weigl (6/10): A very underwhelming performance from the German youngster. Weigl was often isolated or picked apart by the opposing midfielders, which eventually prevented Dortmund from getting a grip-hold into this match.
Gonzalo Castro (6/10): Arguably the most useless player on the night, Castro added absolutely nothing in midfield. By far the worst midfielder of the game.
Shinji Kagawa (6/10): Was almost playing as an auxiliary centre-forward while he was on, but the Japanese International failed to make any real impact on the proceedings.
Andriy Yarmolenko (6.5/10): A disappointing performance from the Ukrainian, who was isolated on the right flank and quite lacked the confidence to wreak havoc on the opposing defence.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (6.5/10): Another awful performance from Aubameyang who not only lacked proper service but also failed to create something for himself.
Christian Pulisic (8/10): Was the only bright spot in a disappointing night for BVB. Pulisic was an absolute threat to the Bayern as he had the courage and confidence to take on the Bayern defenders. Most of BVB’s chances stemmed from his courageous play from the left.
Subs
Jeremy Toljan (6.5/10): Was subbed on for Sokratis just before the first half whistle. The former TSG fullback completely failed to solidify BVB’s defence, often lacking proper positional sense.
Mario Gotze (8/10): Looked very very good after coming on for Shinji Kagawa. Gotze had the willingness to dribble through the Bayern defence, which actually caused quite a bit of trouble for the opposition.
Jadon Sancho (NA): The England prodigy came on for the final ten minutes of the game, and kind of impressed the Dortmund fans with his dynamic wing play.
