The win against Tottenham Hotspur has certainly helped Mesut Ozil in recovering a lot of lost ground. The Arsenal playmaker delivered a finely tuned display as the Gunners dished out a brilliant performance to edge out their North London rivals.
Ozil is often criticised for his laidback attitude in big games but the German international played his part pretty brilliantly as Arsenal emerged out as the deserving winners. Ozil’s brilliance on the pitch has prompted Barcelona to come to the rescue for the contract rebel.
The Spanish club have reportedly offered an escape route for the German star as they are ready to rope him in. Ozil’s future is very unclear at the moment as the 29-year-old hasn’t signed on the dotted line to renew his stay at the Emirates Stadium beyond the current deal, which expires at the end of this season.
Arsene Wenger has maintained a pretty strict discipline over the contract rebels Ozil and Alexis Sanchez and given their contractual situation, Wenger is unlikely to sanction a January move as it would hurt their season in a big way.
Ozil hasn’t featured pretty extensively this season due to an injury. However, it seems that he has only started to show his supremacy and it would be a blunder if Wenger decides to let him leave. Currently, the Gunners depend a lot on both Ozil and Sanchez and Wenger cannot afford losing one of them in the midst of an ongoing campaign.
Barcelona have prioritized the signature of Philippe Coutinho but Liverpool’s increasing unrest in making a deal has forced the club to look out for an alternative choice and Ozil has triggered their interest. The German international has the elegance and flair to thrive in the La Liga, having played in Spain before for Real Madrid.
In a bid to sweeten the move, Barcelona are ready to offer Andre Gomes as a part of the move. The Portuguese midfielder has seen his game time reduced heavily this season as Ernesto Valverde has opted for other midfield combination.
Wenger must be well aware of Gomes’ potential and the absence of Santi Cazorla might tempt him towards a deal. Coutinho has been valued in excess of £130m while Ozil could arrive for a bargain price in the region of £20m.
But if Ozil continues to impress for Arsenal, the club hierarchy might make a last-ditch attempt to offer him an improved contract, which could enhance their chance to get a much better price for the player in future.
