Arsenal are currently in a spot of bother in the Premier League, which has not been helpful for the progress of their campaign. Their stuttering start to the season and a few unexpected losses have taken them to the sixth position in the league table before the international break.
The Gunners are trying their best to overcome the situation and are eyeing a place in the top four, which they were not able to achieve in the last term. Their players, however, have not been able to respond and the North London club might look to add a few new faces to their side in the near future.
The reigning FA Cup champions spent a big amount to bring in the French star Alexandre Lacazette right before the start of the season, which has provided the boost to their goal scoring ability. However, the story has not been the same for their defence, with the centre-backs like Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi and Per Mertesacker not being able to deliver their best performance and getting injured often, to leave the backline vulnerable to rival invasion.
One player who might be a solution to the problem for the North London club is the Uruguayan defender Jose Gimenez, currently plying his trade at Atletico Madrid. The 22-year-old centre-back has been one of the key figures in European football for the last couple of seasons and is eyed by a number of big-name clubs including Arsenal, who are in dire need of a top-class defender to strengthen their backline.
The young central defender is known for his ability to take on the opposition forwards head-on, in the air as well as on the ground and to keep his side out of harm’s way. His hard-hitting tackles and ability to steer the ball out of the danger area have made him a credible character in the squad for his country as well as the club. He also possesses the ability to score from set-piece situations, a trait Arsenal are dearly lacking.
Arsenal are currently playing with a three-man backline and need some smart defenders to make the ploy work properly. With veteran defender Per Mertesacker in his final season at the club and Laurent Koscielny in his 30’s, there is a need for young blood in their defence and Gimenez can be a good inclusion to their lineup in the near future.
But is he the right man for Arsenal?
