Real Madrid has been in horrible form this season. Last year’s Champions League victors have started their season in an awful fashion, as they are already trailing league leaders Barcelona by a whopping ten points in just 12 matchdays.
Most of the players haven’t stepped up to the plate this season which directly correlates to their lack of form. Los Blancos are now desperate for an upturn in fortunes as they look to bounce back from their early-season misery.
In this article, we will discuss three players who need to take their game to the next level, if the European Champions are to retain their titles come the end of this season.
Nacho Fernandez
Even though he’s not a regular starter in the Real Madrid teamsheet, Nacho Fernandez had to feature in a lot of games this season due to frequent injuries/suspension of their primary defensive duo of Raphael Varane and Sergio Ramos.
Nacho has stuttered a lot this season, often failing to keep check of Real Madrid’s defence.
Put simply, the Real Madrid youth product hasn’t been solid enough defensively, meaning he really needs to step up his game and play with more solidity in the Madrid backline.
Karim Benzema
Benzema’s form is often reflected on the actual scoreline of the game and as it happens, Real Madrid are stuttering this season. It’s also no coincidence that star striker has not been up to the mark either.
The Frenchman has been one of the most criticized Real Madrid players in the past few years and talks of him leaving the Bernabeu hasn’t been far off either. This season, the former Lyon striker has only scored one goal in eight matches.
Real Madrid desperately need to improve their end product in the offensive department and Karim Benzema finding his former rhythm will play an important role during the remainder of the season.
Cristiano Ronaldo
By far the most underwhelming performer for Real Madrid this season, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has been one of the most famous disappointments in European football this season. After being banned for five La Liga outings, the 32-year-old came back, offering Real fans a glimmer of hope.
However, eight matches in, the former Manchester United forward has just scored one goal so far this season. Even though Ronaldo has been quite prolific in the Champions League, it’s the league form which is very worrying not just for Real Madrid but for the player himself.
Could this be the end of Cristiano Ronaldo’s unrivalled work-rate and excellent dynamism in the attacking areas of the field? Is it finally time for Real Madrid to get rid of their Portuguese superstar? Only time will tell!
