It doesn’t matter who is the best, only matters who is the first. Liverpool’s agenda could be evident from this line. The Reds have been performing decently so far this season in the Premier League and are sitting pretty in the fifth place in the league table.
There have been galore of goals as the Reds have been in ruthless form in front of the opposition net. Mohamed Salah has been enjoying a sensational return to the Premier League and has been in fantastic form, creating havoc in the opposition ranks.
Despite their fluent form, the defence has been the one thing which has been a stumbling block to Liverpool’s adventure. The Reds have often been embarrassed for their shoddy defensive displays and in this ongoing season, they have already conceded 17 goals, highest among the top five teams in the Premier League.
At the start of the season, Jurgen Klopp opted to continue with his existing defensive setup but it has exposed them badly. Against Sevilla, they were leading 3-0 at the halftime break but some awful defending helped the Spanish team to draw parity as they went on to score three goals past a hapless Liverpool defence.
Klopp will definitely seek new reinforcements in winter and let’s have a look at three likely arrivals at the Anfield.
Virgil van Dijk
One of the most trusted defenders in the Premier League. The Southampton defender had been heavily linked with the Reds and Liverpool’s growing intention regarding the player’ arrival at the Anfield saw them being entangled in a number of events which further maligned their reputation.
The Saints had accused them of illegally tapping the player without their prior permission and even lodged a complaint with the FA. Liverpool were compelled to apologise, following which their urgency to bring the Dutch defender completely stopped.
But now the situation has changed and the Reds might launch an effort to revive their interest in the player.
Clement Lenglet
France does have one of the most envious lineups of youngsters and Clement Lenglet is a part of the side. The 22-year-old has been a part of Sevilla and has impressed with his matured defending in the heart of the backline.
Blessed with great positioning sense and acute passing ability, the youngster is tipped to be the future of the France national team. He might be a top contender to guard the backline for the Merseyside club in the near future as well.
Kalidou Koulibaly
Koulibaly has been one of the reasons behind Napoli’s rise this season. The Italian side have been creating ripples in the Serie-A with some superb attacking display and it wouldn’t have been possible without Koulibaly’s supreme defensive contribution.
He might be another defender whom Liverpool might eye to end their defensive woes.
