There are certain areas which Everton need to address if they don’t want to malign their status in the top flight this season. The Merseyside club have long been on the wrong side this season leaving the fans fuming. The Toffees are still on the edge of the danger line and they need to act very quickly.
According to reports, Everton are planning to bring Nigerian defender Shehu Abdullahi to Goodison Park. The 24-year-old who belongs to Cypriot club Anorthosis Famagusta has emerged as a possible target in the January transfer window.
Defensively, the Toffees have had a torrid time as they have failed to close the floodgate throughout the season so far. One of the main reasons behind their downfall is their defensive frailties, which oppositions have exploited heavily and the result is clearly evident.
Shehu mainly plays on the right side of the defence and can be an able backup of Seamus Coleman, who is yet to make an appearance since his horrific leg break.
Jonjoe Kenny and Cuco Martina have been tried in that position in the absence of Coleman but none of them has been up to the required level and current boss David Unsworth feels he needs some cover for that position.
Despite spending millions in the summer, results have been pretty disappointing for the Merseyside club and chairman Farhad Moshiri will leave no stone unturned to change the fortunes of his team.
The Iranian businessman had backed Ronald Koeman with hefty funds and will be there once again if Unsworth demands any changes on the team.
Shehu helped his country gaining a berth in the World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in Russia next year and has also been a regular for his club. His representatives already made it clear it his agent has a number of offers from various clubs.
“Yes, we have offers from Spain, France, Italy and Merseyside clubs in England.
“We will study which offer is best for our client since he will be a free agent after the World Cup.”
There have been positives in the last two games as the Toffees showed their fighting spirits in the Premier League and they need to maintain that in a bid to improve their current form.
The 24-year-old is defensively very sound, can take on a player successfully and also can contribute to the attack with his marauding runs. He could be one of the many entrants at the Goodison Park in January as the Toffees are expected to undergo another squad overhaul.
