Tottenham Hotspur are seeking to add more young blood to their team in the upcoming transfer window and have now turned their attention to Ajax midfielder Donny Van De Beek. The 20-year old central midfielder has been in very good form for the Dutch team and has been one of their better performers this season. He has already scored three and assisted one in 13 appearances this season for Ajax.
Van De Beek is one of the young players being scouted by the English side. Tottenham’s focus shifted to bring in youth players majorly since the arrival of Pochettino in 2014. In his tenure at the club, he has already changed their identity from Arsenal’s North London rivals to a top English club.
He quickly involved the players from the youth academy, including the induction of a young Harry Kane at the expense of the expensive Roberto Soldado, a move which gained him popularity amongst the local fans.
He developed these players and his focus on youth has seen players like Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Danny Rose, Kieran Trippier and Harry Winks turn into fine first team players for not just Tottenham but also England. Pochettino’s team comprises a majority of the England national set-up, a contribution greatly appraised by national team manager Gareth Southgate.
Pochettino has developed the young Tottenham squad into a pacey, aggressive, determined one with great physical stamina and a love to move the ball fast and into the goal. The team has finished in the top three in the league for two years running now and Pochettino has changed them from a decent club with good ambitions to serious title contenders.
If Van De Beek were to come, he would find it difficult to break into the first team immediately. Tottenham currently have Mousa Dembele, Victor Wanyama, Harry Winks and Eric Dier who can play in the central midfield position. Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Moussa Sissoko are also playing in central midfield as makeshift players. However, if anyone would be willing to gamble on young players it would have to be Pochettino.
Moreover, with Dembele on the wrong side of 30 and his injury proving to be a recurring thing, Pochettino might want to bring in the young Dutchman early and settle him into the squad.
Van De Beek’s inclusion would not be a surprise to anyone as people are now well versed with Pochettino’s love for developing young players. However, whether Pochettino can develop yet another player from the potential youth ranks will be tested if Donny Van De Beek were to come to North London. Do you think he is the right man for Spurs?
