Newcastle United have made a positive start to the season as they have racked up four wins in this hectic campaign. Manager Rafa Benitez has been pretty effective with his strategies but his plans have hit a roadblock due to lack of quality in the side.
The summer transfer window was supposed to be a big one for the Magpies but they failed to lure some of their top targets, which could pose a real threat in the later part of this ongoing season.
According to reports, Newcastle are readying an offer for Sampdoria midfielder Dennis Praet. The Belgian midfielder has been a long-term target for Benitez and the Spanish gaffer wants to revive his interest in January.
Praet has emerged as a realistic target for the Toon. They don’t really have many quality options in the central midfield barring Jonjo Shelvey, Mikel Merino and Jack Colback. Newcastle tried their best to bring the player in the summer but Sampdoria’s strong resistance foiled their plot.
Praet has started this season in a sprinkling mode as he has already racked up three assists in this season. Sampdoria are considering giving him a new contract, given his high prospect. His current contract runs until 2021 and it also includes a release clause of €25m.
Merino is predominantly a deep playmaker, who likes to steer the game from the back. Benitez could do well with the service a box to box midfielder, who can provide him with options in the long run. Praet has an exciting vision of the game and at this tender age, he has made a mark of his own.
The midfielder has a release clause that can be triggered at the end of this season. Benitez is yet to have a chat with owner Mike Ashley on his potential acquisition and his budget.
Ashley is determined to sell the club as soon as possible, so he would be reluctant to invest more money in January. Benitez has already secured the permanent signing of Merino from Borussia Dortmund and a deal for Praet would be seen as his biggest victory.
Funds might be a problem, but Benitez is likely to offload a number of players which should make it easier for the club. But do you think Newcastle United can lure Dennis Praet to England atleast in January?
