Manchester United prodigy Scott McTominay has recently signed a contract extension at the club till 2021. The product of the club’s youth academy has been associated with the club since the age of five and is currently one of their brightest prospects.
The youngster was delighted to be offered a contract extension by the club, stating “I have grown up at this great club and it has always been a big part of my life. I attended the club’s development centre in Preston from the age of five and have gone on to progress from there.
“To make my debut at the end of last season was a dream come true, and I would like to thank the manager for the faith that he has shown in me. I was absolutely delighted when the manager promoted me to the first-team squad and I am looking forward to continuing my journey with this fantastic team.” – he added, as per Manchester United’s official website. Jose Mourinho was also delighted by the contract extension of the Scottish youngster.
But what does it possibly mean for Manchester United and the young McTominay?
McTominay first came into the scene at the end of last season, where he made his Premier League debut against Arsenal, but his first start arrived against Crystal Palace, as he helped his side register a convincing 2-0 win over the Eagles.
A number of injuries meant that he was the surprise inclusion in Manchester United’s summer training camp, where he had an amazing time. The 20-year-old looked very impressive in the pre-season friendlies and never looked out of pace, despite playing against high-quality opposition.
Normally an attacking midfielder, the 20-year-old is a very versatile operator in the centre of the park. He can even play as a striker if needed. In fact, McTominay played as a striker for the most part of Manchester United’s reserve team’s campaign last season. His tenacity and lovely ball control are well suited to the English game.
McTominay gained a lot of experience playing for the Manchester United’s reserves last season, where he played a crucial part in their overall campaign. He featured in 23 games in the Premier League 2 last season, notching up three goals in the process.
The youngster is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League this season, largely due to the lack of chances in the attacking department. However, should the Red Devils suffer any injury blow anytime soon, McTominay can prove to be an exciting alternative for head coach Jose Mourinho.
Over the years, a lot of players stemming from the youth ranks have successfully made a breakthrough into the Manchester United starting lineup and this exciting Scottish talent in Scott McTominay could well be the next one to follow the footsteps of Marcus Rashford.
