Manchester City’s triumphant run in the Premier League could be boosted in the future if Pep Guardiola decides to reinforce his squad in the January transfer window. The Spanish gaffer, in the beginning of the season, appeared to have all the required aspects to conquer the Premier League trophy covered but the lack of depth in the midfield section has been a deep concern for the gaffer.
According to reports, Manchester City are considering launching an offer for AS Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini. The midfielder reintegrated with the Roma side this summer having spent two seasons at Sassuolo before. AS Roma sold the player to the Italian club in 2015 and had put a buyback clause at the time which facilitated the move this summer.
The midfielder flourished at Sassuolo which compelled the Giallorossi to raid the club for his services. Pellegrini’s meteoric rise in the Serie A hasn’t gone unnoticed and it seems Manchester City are very keen to bring the player to the Etihad Stadium.
City have some top-notch talented players with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne leading the way for Guardiola’s men. But the absence of a potential backup plan from Pep could be a potential stumbling block. Also, Illkay Gundogan is yet to hit the ground properly and the Italian international could be a decent reinforcement for Man City. Some may even say that when he returns to first team action, he will feel like a ‘new signing’.
Predominantly a box to box midfielder, he can also operate from the deepest midfield position in the ground. At 21 year old, it would be a bit of a gamble to invest a big amount on him but given his experience and maturity level he could turn out to be a big asset in future.
Pep Guardiola injected new philosophy at the Etihad Stadium and the core set up at the club is very young at the moment. Raheem Sterling, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, John Stones and Benjamin Mendy are all prime examples of Guardiola’s ambitious project and Pellegrini could soon follow their path.
The 21-year-old was a part of the Italy U-21 squad which participated in the European Championship recently and netted one goal in the process. He also made his debut for the senior side this year only and if he continues his development in the current trajectory he might earn his first call-up to the World Cup squad.
Pellegrini has already impressed this season netting two goals in all competitions and it would be hard for the Sky Blues to tempt AS Roma into sanctioning a move for him.
