Manchester City showed the world they are here to stay. Pep Guardiola’s side have displayed a new brand of attacking football this season and as a result, they are currently at the top of the Premier League table.
City thrashed Stoke City 7-2 in the Premier League and followed their excellent form as they edged out Napoli 2-1 in the UEFA Champions League. The Sky Blues are looking in full command this season but there are still a few sections in the side Pep is likely to renovate as soon as possible.
According to reports, the Spaniard is ready to go all out for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl. The 22-year-old is a core part of the new crop of German youngsters and is touted to be the future of the German midfield.
Midfield is one department Guardiola would like make adequate reinforcements. He raided Dortmund for the services of Ilkay Gundogan but frequent injuries curtailed his game time very badly. Added to that, Yaya Toure and Fernandinho’s contract is about to end at the end of this season so if Weigl does come, he will have a pretty big role to play at the Etihad Stadium.
The German international moved to the Signal Iduna Park in 2015 from 1860 Munich and since, has been a key part of the side. He signed a new contract last year which extended his stay at the club till 2021.
Pep’s former club is also ready to compete with the English side for his services. Barcelona are readying a replacement for Sergio Busquets who has been a long-term servant for the Catalan. The Spanish giants are very excited about the player’s prospect and want to bring him to the Camp Nou in a bid to ensure they progress in the right direction.
Weigl does have the tenacity and mindset to thrive in Premier League and he is just the player Pep has been craving for long.
The youngster dictates the course of the play from deep, restores calmness on the pitch with his break up play and interceptions, and creatively also, he can be very incisive with his passing.
To ensure his attacking players can play with a free mind, Guardiola needs a proper midfield enforcer very badly and Weigl is as good an option as there is in the market. He is often compared to Busquets who has given the defensive midfield role a new dimension and could emulate his role at the Etihad Stadium.
But can Pep land him?
