Leeds United are interested in Werder Bremen forward Aron Johannsson as per reports. The American striker has found life very difficult in the Bundesliga, and with the player seemingly finding it difficult to get game time under his belt, he could well be on his way out of the Weserstadion this upcoming January. In fact, the US international revealed earlier this season that he ‘won’t get any chance at Werder Bremen’ – as per ESPN.
Aron Johannsson is claimed to be a long time transfer target for Leeds United, and the striker was also linked with a move to the Championship in the summer but the Whites chose to go with Hamburg”s Pierre-Michel Lasogga. With Leeds United constantly making a push for the top three spots in the league and Lasogga being one of their top scorers this season, the Peacocks are fancying another Bundesliga striker in Aron Johannsson.
However, the US star could actually prove to be an awful signing for the Championship giants. Since moving to the Bundesliga in 2015, from AZ Alkmaar, Aron Johannsson has completely failed to establish himself as a complete forward in the German top flight.
In two seasons, the 26-year-old has made just 16 Bundesliga appearances, most of which came as a sub. This season, the striker has only managed three minutes of football under his belt, and his awful performances have also lead to his demotion to the reserves.
In terms of quality, Johannsson possesses very little threat and most of his good games come against the low-tier oppositions. His ball control and first touch are awful, which often costs possession for his team. In addition, the American is not the greatest of finishers either.
His game time at Bremen drastically decreased following the appointment of current coach Alexander Nouri, who prefers strong and flexible forwards in his starting eleven.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga has come under fire in recent weeks for his downturn of form, which forces Leeds United to scour the transfer market for another forward. However, signing Aron Johannsson will only cause trouble for the Championship giants who looks to finally gain promotion after a long stint in the English second division.
The 26-year-old had been linked with MLS clubs in the likes of Real Salt Lake and the Philadelphia Union in the past and moving back to his homeland seems the most logical decision for the underperforming Bremen striker.
