According to reports, Leeds United are taking serious steps to land Montpellier defender William Rémy in January. The Whites are fighting with odds in the Championship to grab a place in the playoff positions.
The Yorkshire giants started the season on a brilliant note but they seemed to have not taken a lesson from their distraught performances in the last season. Leeds kept themselves intact in the sixth position almost throughout the season but their performance dipped in the latter half of the season and as a result, they missed on a playoffs position.
Thomas Christiansen is currently a bit weak in the centre back department as Mathew Pennington hasn’t been impressive. The Everton loanee has been juggling with injuries and the gaffer wants more options at his disposal.
Remy has fallen down the pecking order and this could be the best time for Leeds to hijack the defender. The 26-year old’s contract is also scheduled to be expired at the end of this season so the Whites will have the chance to get him in a cutoff deal.
Leeds made contact with the French club in the summer as they were hoping to seal a very late move for the defender but at that time, the deal didn’t materialise. But looking at the current scenario, it could prove to be a beneficiary deal for both the club and the player.
Remy hasn’t been used at all and is expected to leave the club in the near future. Montpellier signed the player on a free transfer so they would like to gain some profit from Leeds United if they are to let him go.
A former France U19 international, Remy has significant experience in the French top tier and would be a decent addition. His wage also doesn’t seem to hurt the club coffers much, so overall, a move for him makes sense.
The 26-year-old can also fill in the right back and can also play his part as a defensive midfielder. The defender is physically strong and can also very effective in the air.
Leeds are aiming to get back to the top tier and Christiansen is likely to seek reinforcements in January to help his side improve. Remy would command a much much lower fee than top centre backs although an offer hasn’t been made. Do you think they should go all out for him?
