Ivan Perisic’s much-hyped move to Manchester United didn’t go through in the summer and the player went on to sign a brand new contract with Inter Milan recently. But the Red Devils haven’t given up yet and according to reports, Jose Mourinho is planning to raid the Italian club next summer to add the versatile winger to his squad.
The Red Devils had been particularly interested in the Croatian winger as the gaffer wanted to have a specialist on the flanks. Perisic has been one of the most renowned wingers in the European circuit and with time his value has only increased.
Mourinho brought in Romelu Lukaku from Everton in the summer and had been on the lookout for a winger to combine with the Belgian front man. Lukaku has a knack of banging in the headers and Perisic’s ability to float in crosses on a consistent basis could have been a golden opportunity for them but as of now, the Red Devils have performed quite brilliantly in the attacking front despite not having Perisic.
Both Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are very different from what Perisic could have offered to the side but have exceeded expectations this season as they shared 10 goals between them this season. So Mourinho might just want to wait out this season as his side have been on a scoring spree.
Since the move failed Perisic has signed a new five year deal with the San Siro based club but his contract reportedly includes a release clause of £54m which can only be triggered after this season.
Perisic has been quite instrumental in Inter’s jubilant season so far as they have won seven out of eight and the Italian club has ensured he remains at the club at least for this season. The 28-year-old has been in excellent form for the Nerazurri’s and has racked up three goals and as many assists in seven Serie A games.
However, things might take a new turn as the player will be turning 29 next season and age could be a factor for the Red Devils. However, Mourinho is an avid admirer of the player and might get tempted to bring him into his fold.
United had tried throughout the season but had to shift their interest elsewhere as Inter slapped a £54m valuation on the player. Manchester United are currently in second place in the Premier League and are very much in the contention of the Premier League title. Who knows what the future holds?
