Everton are having one of their worst runs in the Premier League this term and are currently standing right in the relegation zone. They have won only two matches so far this term, which has got their manager Ronald Koeman sacked from the top job at Goodison Park.
The Toffees are currently playing under the stewardship of their youth team coach David Unsworth and are awaiting a new manager to take charge of their side in the near future. Ronald Koeman took charge in the last term and helped his club to finish among the top eight teams, leading them to the Europa League this season.
However, they have looked far from their best this season and failed to make an impact in any competition with the new look side. Koeman brought in a number of players during the summer transfer window but none of them has been able to show anything significant so far for their team, with their club succumbing to six defeats in their first nine matches.
During his tenure, the Dutch manager did not seem to be happy with all his players, particularly with Oumar Niasse and Ross Barkley. While he restricted the Senegalese striker to a loan spell in the last term with the relegated side Hull City, the English midfielder reportedly had a rift with Koeman over signing a new contract.
The midfielder, however, is currently recovering from an injury and might have a chance to feature for the side after getting back to full fitness.
The player has less than 12 months left on his current contract at Goodison Park and has been eyed by a number of clubs in the Premier League over the last few months. He was very close to signing for the reigning champions Chelsea in the last transfer window but finally decided against the move and is still a part of the Toffees.
He was quite clear about the fact that it was his fitness that restricted him from making the move out of Everton and he would like to be fit enough, not to sit the rest of the season at a new club. He might look to make a move out of the club in the next transfer window once again..
So it can be said that the player might not agree to stay back at Everton until the end of this season and the sacking of Ronald Koeman has got nothing to do with it. But Unsworth believes he might have a future. So what next for Barkley?
