Everton have been on a manager hunting-spree since they parted ways with Ronald Koeman a few days ago. The Dutch gaffer left his Everton job, following a miserable start to this campaign, despite spending £142.8m in the summer transfer window. The Toffees’ hierarchy has shortlisted some of the leading managers to replace Koeman and reports indicate that they might be interested in Sam Allardyce.
The English manager left Crystal Palace last season after guiding the team towards safety. His resignation was not expected at that time but he left everybody stunned when he resigned from his post. It was rumoured that he would take a retirement following his brief stint at the Selhurst Park but he has since made himself available.
The Everton hierarchy would be aware of his ability as his record with the small clubs remains pretty fascinating. He has an envious CV which includes some glittering stints with Crystal Palace and Sunderland. Palace were on the verge of getting demoted to the Championship as the Eagles relieved Alan Pardew from his duties at the Selhurst Park late last season.
Big Sam went on to stabilise their season with some changes in the tactics, which became very evident for the Eagles as the season went on. The same thing happened with him at Sunderland as he replaced Dick Advocaat with utmost success as the Black Cats secured their Premier League status.
Allardyce expressed his interest in the coveted Everton job and opened up on the prospect of being the manager at the Goodison Park. “Who knows? I’d have to consider that, if that phone call happens,”
“Joe (Royle) sat upstairs will have an opinion but at the moment it looks like it’s really going to be tough for Everton to get out of that position.”
Perhaps the Merseyside club needs someone who would be able to work on the basics. Koeman tried too many things in a bid to restore stability at the club, which could be the reason behind their downfall.
If Allardyce does get the Everton job, Crystal Palace are set for a windfall. The London club reportedly set up a clause in the contract which compelled a club to provide them with compensation in the region of £2m, if Allardyce joins a club before a stipulated period, which could be upcoming July.
Allardyce was also tipped to be the next manager of Scotland following Gordan Strachan’s resignation but it seems he is back in contention for this lucrative job. David Unsworth has been the interim manager but it is very unlikely he will be given the charge on a permanent basis. So is Allardyce the right man for Everton?
