Southampton have been rocked by a series of uncharacteristic performances this season in the Premier League. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side has been on an inconsistent run of form and the manager has been trying to refuel the side to help gain some momentum.
If rumours are to be believed, Southampton are monitoring Alaves’, Alfonso Pedraza. The Spaniard is having a great time at the La Liga club but his brilliant form hasn’t inspired his side, who have been on an awful run. Alaves, which also happens to be Pellegrino’s former club, are currently struggling for existence in the La Liga.
The 21-year-old is well acquainted with the English conditions having played for Leeds United in the Championship last season. Leeds brought the 21-year-old on loan and even had the option to make his move permanent for a fee of £9m provided they gain a promotion.
But his stint was shortlived as the Whites couldn’t qualify for the playoffs and it put an end to his adventure on English soil. But he has flourished since he has been sent out on loan again to Alaves. A product of the Villarreal academy, the player never got that chance to showcase his skills and that has compelled the club to send him to various clubs sporadically.
Pedraza has transformed his game a lot and has established himself as a marauding full-back these days. He remains an exciting talent and if he is consistent, his stock will definitely rise in the coming future.
Before loaning him to Alaves, Villarreal extended his stay and the player is now contracted with the club till 2021. They don’t want to lose the player as they believe he has the quality to match the intensity at the highest level.
Alongside the Saints, Newcastle United are also believed to have scouted the player on many occasions. A left-back has been a long-term target for Rafa Benitez and the Spaniard gaffer is set to have fresh funds in January if Mike Ashley manages to find a buyer for the club.
He can easily throw a challenge to Ryan Bertrand and the fact that he is only 21 would give Pellegrino a better chance to mould him according to his needs. The Saints’ manager remained silent throughout the transfer window but given their form, they would be planning to sign some big names in a bid to re-establish themselves in the Premier League. But is Pedraza the right man?
