French defensive midfielder Etienne Capoue has spent two happy years at Watford. The midfielder, who can also play as a defender, was brought in by Watford on the first week of July in 2015. He cost the club a record £6.3 m.
Brought in from Tottenham Hotspur where he failed to get a regular starting berth, he was expected to be a mainstay at Watford. The player is known for his stunning long-range goals and has impressed in his two years at Watford.
The 29-year old began his senior career back in Toulouse back in 2007. He played for the French club for six seasons after making his debut as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Lille. He went on to make 196 appearances for them. He scored 13 goals and created 10 more during his stint at Toulouse, many of them from outside the box. His numbers were impressive for a defensive midfielder and his good form earned him a call-up to the English Premier League.
Tottenham Hotspur paid £9.3m for the Frenchman and secured his services in the summer of 2013. However, his career at White Hart Lane took a blip and he never really made it into the first team on a regular basis. He did, however, continue to build his reputation as a scorer of eccentric goals and finished his Tottenham career with two beautiful goals in 36 games for the club.
The move to Watford came as a welcome exit for Capoue, who had grown frustrated at Tottenham. He has already made 81 appearances for the Hornets in just over 2 seasons and has added 9 goals to his tally in the process.
A regular first-team player, Capoue has enjoyed his time at Watford and has revealed that he wishes to not only see out his contract which has another two years left but to extend it if given the opportunity.
”I want to stay here. I have two more years and I feel good at the club, “Capoue told the Evening Standard.”It is up to me. If I‘m doing well on the pitch, I will stay here. If I‘m not good and someone plays in my place, maybe they will put me out. I have a very good relationship with the president (owner Gino Pozzo). They have put me in the best condition to show my football, I feel grateful. Of course, I want to carry on this Watford adventure. There is a very good goal here, a big project here.” he said in a recent interview.
Watford will also want to not part ways with Capoue who has helped them enjoy a good start to the season so should they offer him a new deal as soon as possible?
