Andre Gomes, who was close to a deadline day move away from Barcelona has now again been linked with a move to Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham side. If any manager can give rebirth to a young talent, it is Pochettino. He is a living example of what to do as a manager to take your team to the next level by converting raw talent to superstar players.
Tottenham Hotspur have always been competitive in the English league. They, however, were never really considered one of the big boys in England. In came Pochettino in 2014 and 174 matches later, Tottenham took a visit to the holy grail of football, Santiago Bernabeu, to take on the European Champions Real Madrid, in what proved to be an exciting evenly-contested match.
They came back to the league to humiliate Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool 4-1 at Wembley.
Pochettino has developed the young Tottenham team into pacey, aggressive, determined players with great physical stamina and a love to move the ball fast and into the goal. The team has finished in the top three in the league for two years running now and Pochettino has converted Tottenham from a decent club with good ambitions to serious title contenders.
Exceptional performances from players who were unknown a few seasons back, have transformed them into a world class side. The current Tottenham team boasts of world-class players like Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, Hugo Lloris and many more. What is more prudent, however, is the fact that they uncannily keeps producing new talent almost every game week.
Latest reports coming in have linked Andre Gomes of Barcelona with a move to the Premier League side. Should the deal go through, it possibly could benefit both parties. Barcelona have never used the midfielder properly and Gomes is a misfit of sorts at the club.
His career at the Catalan club has failed spectacularly. Signed after Portugal’s impressive win in Euro 2016 from Valencia for £31.5m, the Portuguese has failed to make a mark at Barcelona.
He has only played in 17 La Liga games, struggling to establish himself as a regular starter. The 24-year-old has got just 22 minutes of league action this season, in two substitute appearances
He is yet to nail down a starting spot and is far from becoming a fan favourite. He has had to endure a torrid time at the club and maybe a move to Tottenham would suit him. The English club, under Pochettino, plays a more fast-paced type of football, something Gomes is suited for, rather than Barcelona’s intricate passing game, an aspect of football Gomes is yet to master.
So a move to England could be the best way forward for the midfielder. But is he the man for Spurs?
