Crystal Palace will be hoping for some redemption when they face Bristol City in the round of 16 game in the Carabao Cup this week. The Eagles derailed Chelsea in the Premier League but were brought back to earth by Newcastle United in the last match as the Magpies defeated them 1-0.
Hodgson’s first win at the Selhurst Park came in this competition only and he would like to give it an extended run. Palace had a miserable run in the Premier League but that shouldn’t affect their performance in this tie.
Roy Hodgson is likely to test his bench strength and a number of first team starters will be given a breather to keep themselves afresh for the West Ham United match at the weekend. Bristol City got hammered at the hand of Leeds United in the last encounter and would be looking to make amends in this match.
Palace looked pretty confident whenever they played in this competition this season and it should be a comfortable win for them.
Predicted 4-4-2 Crystal Palace Lineup Against Bristol City
Defence
Julian Speroni will continue to be in the Crystal Palace goal. The 38-year-old replaced Wayne Hennessey in the last match and should retain his position.
Damian Delaney will be given a chance to marshal Eagles’ backline. He will have the backing of James Tomkins who is arguably one of the best defenders available at Hodgson’s disposal.
Papa Souare played against Huddersfield Town in the last round and is gearing up for his first start since his horrible car crash last year. The left-back has recovered completely and Hodgson might indulge him in this match.
Martin Kelly will have his chance from the right side of the defence.
Midfield
James McArthur was seen playing on the right wing but in this match, he will be back to his favourable midfield position. The 30-year-old needs to be a bit aware as a minute lack of concentration can invite danger for his side.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been pretty impressive whenever he has been given a chance. The young midfielder is set for another stern test in the middle of the pitch.
Attack
Bakary Sako scored the solitary goal against the Terriers and is likely to take his position on the left wing. Chung-Yong Lee is set for a start on the right wing. Freddie Ladapo will lead the line for the Eagles. Aaron Townsend will be alongside him to ease off the pressure.
This is how they might line up:
