The impressive DFB Pokal second round encounter between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig was the most controversial match in this year’s Cup campaign. It took Bayern the help of penalties to get the better of RB Leipzig but die Roten-Bullen, will seek retribution as the two teams face-off once again in the Bundesliga this upcoming weekend.
The record champions Bayern will be hoping to beat Leipzig once again as they look to dethrone Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga league table. Leipzig, however, can also go top of the table if they beat Bayern and if Dortmund loses points against Hannover.
Here’s the predicted Bayern Munich lineup to feature against Ralph Hassenhuttl’s men this weekend.
Defense
Sven Ulreich’s save against Timo Werner guided Bayern to a victory against RB Leipzig in midweek. He will retain his place between the sticks this weekend as well.
Jerome Boateng is expected to be rested out for the clash. In his stead, youngster Niklas Sule will partner Mats Hummels in the centre of the defence. While Joshua Kimmich and David Alaba will retain their place in the starting lineup, with both occupying the fullback spots.
Midfield
Arturo Vidal was highly criticized for his notorious performance against Leipzig in midweek. The Chilean will no doubt be rested on the weekend. Javi Martinez will return to midfield. He will partner fellow compatriot Thiago Alcantara in central midfield.
Martinez will play a crucial role in keeping out the likes of Kevin Kampl and Diego Demme from influencing the game. While Thiago’s presence in the team will be a massive boost for Bayern in terms of creativity and control ove the midfield.
Attack
James Rodriguez didn’t travel with the team in the midweek game against Leipzig but the Colombian is expected to return to the starting fold this weekend. He will start in attacking midfield.
On the flanks, Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman will look to influence the game with their pace and trickery. Both the players have been in excellent form ever since head coach Jupp Heynckes took charge of the club earlier this month.
Robert Lewandowski will start as the lone forward. The Polish striker will play a key role as Bayern look to get back to their customary number one spot come the end of the matchday.
Here is how they might line up:
