Under the stewardship of Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolverhampton Wanderers have started their Championship season in a productive manner as they have piled 10 piled from their first 5 league outings, which comprises of wins against Middlesbrough, Hull City and Derby County. Besides, they have made some astute signings during the summer transfer window as they brought some quality names like Ruben Neves, Roderick Miranda, Barry Douglas and Ryan Bennett to the Molineux Stadium.
During the closing stages of the transfer window, one of the players they enquired about was Derby County’s striker Chris Martin, according to one of the reports by Express & Star. Martin has been keenly followed by Wolves for quite some time now and the Daily Mail had reported last summer that a bid of £6million was launched by them. Their recent interest emerged after they failed to strike a deal with PSV Eindhoven for signing Jurgen Locadia.
Martin could have been a stunning acquisition for Espirito Santo, for he is someone who has proved his mettle in the Championship time and again. Having blossomed through the youth ranks of Norwich City, the Scottish international was elevated to their senior side where he did show a lot of exuberance.
Eventually, he joined the Rams in the summer of 2013 after his decent loan spell. Last season, he was shipped out on loan to fellow Championship outfit Fulham and his spell with the Cottagers proved to be productive.
The 28-year-old smashed 10 goals and created 28 chances in 30 appearances for the London based club and his fine run of finding the back of the net on a frequent basis must have urged Wolves to inquire about him. Martin is a strong and combative striker who has an appealing predatory instinct.
He is someone who brings his teammates into the play, keeps making attempts in order to breach the opposition’s defence and his strong physique enables him to hold the ball meticulously up front.
Despite his success with Fulham, he decided not to make a permanent move and stayed at the Pride Park Stadium. Wolves allowed Nouha Dicko to make a move to Hull City, whereas Joe Mason was farmed out on loan to Burton Albion, which implies that Leo Bonatani would be under immense pressure this season. In such a scenario, Martin could have been made the focal point of Wolves’ attacking endeavours, had he made a move to their ranks.
