According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur will come back for Ross Barkley in winter after apparently dropping the chance to sign him on Thursday. The Everton midfielder has been out with a serious hamstring injury at the moment with many reports claiming that his failure to move to Chelsea was more to do his failed medical than his unwillingness to join the Blues.
Hence, for Spurs to invest heavily on a player, who is currently struggling to recover from a hamstring and could likely be out for up to two months, seem foolish. The Toffees have been asking somewhere in the region of £30 million for their homegrown talent and given the fact that he is out of contract next season makes it better for Spurs.
Everton are probably going to be the sore loser here as the Merseyside club are the unlikely to get anything close to their asking price if they sell him in winter. Spurs could land one of the most promising talents in England for cut price deal.
Despite having the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Heung Min Son, Harry Kane and Mousa Dembele in their attack, all of whom make them one of the Lilywhites one of the most dangerous sides to play against, Mauricio Pochettino’s biggest concern has been their backup in the midfield. While Harry Winks is still too young to take on the top sides as and when called and Eric Dier has mostly played as a central defender owing to their continuous injury crisis at the back.
23-year-old Barkley could be the perfect addition to the squad by all means. The academy product of Everton has been a fan favourite at the Goodison Park since breaking into the senior squad back in 2011. In the 179 games, he played for them so far, the forward has scored 27 goals and provided 28 assists.
While Spurs might have made a brilliant move to delay Barkley’s signing till winter, it is also a great gamble. And the immediate concerns remain the major one. Spurs failed to get Andre Gomes from Barcelona on loan after weeks of pursuit and had to leave out on Leicester City’s Demarai Gray as the Foxes were dead against selling him.
It keeps their midfield limitations same for the time being. And although reports claim Barkley wants a move to Spurs over London clubs Chelsea and Arsenal, both of them have the resources and stature to swoop in and snap him up from under Spurs’ nose.
