Mauricio Pellegrino’s men had built themselves a platform last game week to extend their confidence and their run after a win over Crystal Palace but if they had to move ahead, they had to surpass Manchester United and they didn’t. Romelu Lukaku’s opener was enough as Southampton’s desperation and an uplifting performance went in vain. Here’s how the Saints have been rated:-
GK: Fraser Forster – 6/10
Made a great save to stop Lukaku but United scored through rebound. He is slowly gaining his form back.
RB: Cedric Soares – 6/10
Kept at bay by Rashford and Young. He couldn’t provide useful end product while going forward.
CB: Maya Yoshida – 6/10
Had to deal with Lukaku but not very noticeable.
CB: Wesley Hoedt – 6/10
Tidy and stuck to basics.
LB: Ryan Bertrand – 4/10
He got the opportunity to go ahead so many times and he wasted them. His touches were also a letdown today.
CM: Oriel Romeu – 6/10
Had to battle against Matic and Fellaini for midfield control and it was a brilliant saga. He got his fair share of positives.
CM: Mario Lemina – 8/10
He looked magnificent today. His confidence has grown and he took the battle openly against United. His stamina and ball control were superb as well.
CAM: Steven Davis – 5/10
He got very little time on the ball and on few occasions.
LM: Nathan Redmond – 5/10
He seriously has to improve on his end product and control of the ball. Gave away the ball too many times and struggled to make an impact from the left and didn’t combine with Bertrand too.
RM: Dusan Tadic – 5/10
Ashley Young kept his leash heavily on Tadic and Tadic didn’t enjoy the game as much as he did with Palace.
ST: Shane Long – 5/10
Outclassed by Jones and Bailly in the game. He got few chances to set up the counter but not at all effective.
