On the deadline day of the summer transfer window, League One outfit Charlton Athletic pencilled a loan deal in order to lure Rangers’ attacker Joe Dodoo to The Valley.
Dodoo has joined the English outfit until January as a last moment deal under the tutelage of Karl Robinson, who made some decent signings like Ben Reeves, Mark Marshall, Jay Dasilva and Tariqe Fosu. For the Addicks, Dodoo is unarguably a fine acquisition, but have Rangers committed a mistake by letting him go out on loan?
Dodoo emerged through the youth ranks of Leicester City and was promoted to the senior side of the Foxes. While he was in their books, he was shipped out on loan to Bury. The Gers monitored him closely and when the opportunity surfaced to sign him, they wasted very little time and roped him to the Ibrox Stadium last summer on a four-year deal. However, he struggled to cement his place in the tactical nous of Pedro Caixinha as well as his predecessor Mark Warburton.
The youngster just scored 5 goals in 25 appearances for the Glasgow giants, most of which were cameos from the bench. He did show occasional moments of sheer exuberance for his parent club but he fell behind in the pecking order after the former Al-Gharafa boss secured the services of strikers in the shapes of Eduardo Herrera and Alfredo Morelos. Caixinha’s is revolutionising the club and thus, sent Dodoo out on loan so that he can brush himself up.
The 22-year-old has started his Charlton Athletic career is an appealing manner as he came off the bench and smashed the fourth goal of the Red Robins in their exciting 4-3 win over Oldham last weekend.
He used his pace and trickery exceptionally well and impressed during his time on the pitch and went on to become the fifth player who were let to leave by Rangers during the summer transfer window, after Joe Garner, Martyn Waghorn, Barrie McKay and Michael O’Halloran.
Although some of the fans of the Teddy Bears have already started to show their dissatisfaction of Caixinha’s move to let the attacker go out on loan, the starlet would accumulate the much-needed experience under his belt so that he can come back to Rangers with full confidence. He is raw, mobile and very quick but needs to polish his rough edges and the loan spell should help him in the process of the continuation of his development.
